Meet the Founders of the Flute Pedagogy Project!

Isabella Carucci

Co-Founder & Executive Director

Isabella Carucci is the winner of the 2024 Solo Honors Competition and performed “Renaissance Concerto” by Lukas Foss as a soloist with the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra in April 2024. Most recently, she has received the first prize at the Bellagrande International Music Competition (2023), second prize at the Darlene Dugan Young Artist Competition (2024), and honorable mention at the MTNA Young Woodwind Artists Competition (2023). A student of Amy Porter, she studies flute performance and writing at the University of Michigan, maintaining university honors as an incoming senior. Isabella is a writer and editor for the NY Flute Club Newsletter, a substitute piccolo player for the Lima Symphony Orchestra, and is currently attending the Aspen Music Festival and School this summer.

Mattie Levy

Co-Founder & Composition Liason

Mattie Levy is a coordinator for the University of Michigan’s SMTD Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in addition to a Program Coordinator Assistant for Wolverine Pathways. She recently graduated from the University of Michigan with an M.A. in Composition and M.M. in Oboe Performance. By highlighting marginalized voices, while contemplating universal concepts such as loss, independence, joy, and relationships, Mattie works to humanize the Black experience beyond trauma. Recipient of the prestigious Presser Award, Mattie’s musical entitled Concert Black follows three Black classical musicians and their journey within and outside of academia. Mattie is the co-founder of Black Leaders in Art Collective, and her essay entitled “If my Imposter Syndrome had a Voice and the Reality of the Situation” was published in the online journal "Music and Politics in the Moment."

Ella Hursh

Co-Founder & Education Branch Manager

Ella Hursh is a senior at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance majoring in instrumental music education and flute performance. Ella enjoys teaching through programs such as the Crescendo Detroit Pathways Program where she has taught beginning band, jazz band, and general music classes. This past year, Ella acted as Dean’s Liaison for the Music Education department and an ensemble manager for the Michigan Youth Ensembles. Inspired by her internship with the Social Impact department at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Ella became a Performing Arts EXCELerator Fellow with her team and their venture, Flute Pedagogy Project. She is a recipient of the Dr. Robert Hawkins Memorial Scholarship and the University of Michigan Band Alumni Association Scholarship. She maintains University Honors standing as a James B. Angell Scholar. This summer, Ella looks forward to beginning her term as president of the Michigan Collegiate NAfME Board and attending conducting symposiums at Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota as an undergraduate fellow.
